Our Etruscan Coast Guide Centre
recommends you the following places:

Baratti and Populonia: on a hill, just over the enchanting gulf of Baratti, Populonia was a very important Etruscan town, the only one to be built directly along the coast.

We recommend you to visit the archaeological park (it's possible to see both necropolis and acropolis) and the beautiful medieval castle of Populonia Alta.

Campiglia Marittima  is a small village which was a miners' hometown in the past. It still retains its charming medieval look and atmosphere.

Near Campiglia is possible to visit also the Archaeological and Mineralogical Park of San Silvestro and to walk along some trekking paths to discover a lovely Mediterranean wood, grown on pure limestone.

Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri, you can reach the beautiful village of Bolgheri along the famous "Cypresses' boulevard", about which Giosue Carducci (an italian poet of the XIX century) wrote a famous poem.  Nowadays this boulevard is a national monument. In the nearby countryside famous wines such as Sassicaia and Ornellaia are produced. Very interesting are Castagneto and the Castle of Bolgheri, once dominated by the Della Gherardesca Counts.

Livorno and its Sanctuary, Montenero:Leghorn's historical center and the old "Venice quarter" where used to live merchants and sailors, are very well preserved. In town is also possible to visit the Liberty Lungomare (seaside boulevard) and some interesting fortresses, churches, museums. On the nearby hills is the Montenero Church, a sanctuary dedicated to Saint Mary of Montenero, patron of Tuscany, famous for miracles.

Piombino, main town of Val di Cornia, has a very well restored historical center, that holds precious monuments. Near Piombino is possible to visit the castle of Populonia Alta and the Archaeological park of Baratti-Populonia. On the Promontory of Piombino is also possible to walk along trekking seaside paths, with landscapes of astonishing beauty and the typical Mediterranean vegetation.

Portoferraio is the main town of Elba Island. Here lived Napoleon in his ten-months exile, but he was not the only one to leave his traces. The Grand Dukes of Tuscany left here an amazing heritage of architecture, which makes Portoferraio one of the most important "ideal fortresses" of the Italian Renaissance.

Rio Marina and Rio nell'Elba on Elba Island. Here is possible to visit the disused iron mines, now Mineralogical Park and an interesting collection of minerals from the whole island. The historical centers are both lovely and well kept, nice to be seen in every season. Between the two villages is the church of Saint Catherine, recently restored, with an interesting botanical garden.

Suvereto, a medieval village that still retains the atmosphere of its origin, coming out from stone buildings and stone roads, dominated by an ancient castle. In 2003 the village has been awarded with the "orange flag", a sign of quality given by the Italian Touring Club.

In the nearby Grosseto province is recommended in Capalbio, the “Giardino dei Tarocchi”  (Tarots' Garden), one of the most amazing contemporary art gardens, a many-coloured, sparkling place, full of magical surprires.

Massa Marittima, (in Grosseto province),  small medieval town, very well preserved, where is possible to see buildings of the XIV century and old tower-houses. In its beautiful square there’s the Romanesque cathedral dedicated to Saint Cerbone, where masterpieces by Giovanni Pisano and Duccio da Buoninsegna are preserved.
